The Truth About Ear Plug Earphones: How They're Causing More Harm Than Good

The Truth About Earplug Earphones

If you're an avid music listener, chances are you've probably tried earplug earphones at least once in your life if not more than once. Though they may have seemed like a great investment at the time, this could be one of the worst decisions you ever made when it comes to sound quality and how it affects your hearing. Here are four reasons why you should think twice before investing in a pair of earplug earphones again.

What's Wrong with Earplug Headphones

Earplug headphones are a great invention for those that love to listen to music on the go. After all, no one enjoys having their ears ringing from the high volume. But what you may not know is that earplug headphones are doing more harm than good.

Earplugs are meant to block out sound, but they also block air flow which can cause your eardrums to shrink and push back against your skull. This can lead to many hearing-related problems such as tinnitus (ringing in the ears) or auditory processing disorder (difficulty understanding speech). Plus, earplugs can make it difficult for your eardrums to return to their original shape which could lead to surgery down the road.

What is Noise-induced hearing loss?

Noise-induced hearing loss is a type of hearing loss that occurs when there's prolonged exposure to noise. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) estimates that over 15 million Americans are exposed to hazardous noise in the workplace each year, which can lead to permanent hearing damage. Just like how we wear earplugs on airplanes to protect our ears from the change in air pressure, wearing earplugs can help protect your ears from loud noises.

For you to experience noise-induced hearing loss, you need two things:

Exposure to sound louder than 85 decibels over time
A sound frequency range of between 2000 and 8000 Hz

How Does This Happen?

Earplug earphones are marketed as a simple and convenient way to protect your ears while listening to music. But there is one big problem with them: they can cause more harm than good. The truth is that earplug earphones increase the risk of hearing loss by muffling sound, which in turn causes you to listen at much louder volumes. When you listen at louder volumes, it's easier for sound waves to enter your inner ear canal and reach your eardrum without being fully processed, which can lead to permanent hearing loss.

Protecting Your Hearing- Listen Safely

Most people know that listening to music at a high volume can damage your hearing. However, many are unaware that earplug earphones are a major contributor to this problem. These types of earphones are designed to be inserted into the ear canal and have an effect similar to placing a finger in the ears, blocking out all external sounds. This is problematic because it prevents you from being able to hear environmental sounds warning of danger like oncoming traffic or an approaching train. In addition, people who use earplug earphones often turn up the volume while they are wearing them so they can still hear their music despite the obstruction of sound caused by these devices. This increases their risk for hearing loss because it allows them to listen at higher volumes than if they were not wearing them.
