The Bible wants us to be Rich: Here's Why
You will be poor, Jesus says, but your Father in heaven will make you rich. Many Christians don't understand what this means and why Jesus would say such a thing if he truly wanted us to be humble and poor. But the Bible does want us to be rich, not in terms of possessions but in terms of wisdom, peace, and purpose. Here's why that is, and how we can achieve it.
We are created for success and satisfaction
According to scripture, we are created for success and satisfaction. In Psalm 37:4, the bible says Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart. This is a powerful statement that is echoed throughout scripture. What this means is that God knows what we need and wants for us and has provided a way for us to get them! But it doesn't just stop there. If we continue reading in Psalms 37, verse 11 says, But the rich are hungry and thirsty; they will never have enough. The Bible clearly tells us that wealth is not something that money can buy. It can be obtained by walking with God. We are created to be rich spiritually, but not financially.
If we leave God out, we'll miss his blessings
God loves us. He wants to bless us, but if we leave him out of the equation then our lives will be empty, and we'll miss his blessings
Jesus said, I have come that they may have life and have it in abundance. The gospel is about abundant life, life with meaning, purpose, and hope; life filled with goodness. Jesus came so that we could live lives worthy of the Lord (1 Thessalonians 2:12). He invites us to follow Him so that we can live happy, meaningful lives (John 10:10). And he promises to give us rest for our souls (Matthew 11:28-30).
It may seem as though there are many paths that lead to happiness.
God has given us roles in his economy
A great example of this is the role we have as workers in the economy. God has given us our jobs, and these are a vital part of His plan for redeeming the world. We work so that we can provide for ourselves and others, who may not be able to work or provide for themselves. This fulfills God's commandment to not just take from the earth but also to give back (Ecclesiastes 3:9-10). When we have an understanding of what God has given us, it is easier to understand that He wants us to be rich, so long as we use our time and talents wisely.
Giving brings blessings, but only when done spiritually
It is true that giving always brings blessings. It is a biblical principle, and we see it in the story of the widow who put two small coins into the church offering plate. When Jesus notices her act of faith, he declared to his disciples, Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury.
How wealthy do you want to be?
Wealthy means different things to different people. It could mean having enough money to take care of your family or being financially secure enough so that you don't have to worry about the basics. It can also mean having a lifestyle of luxury and extravagance, but this is not the type of wealth that Jesus talked about in the bible. He was talking about the type of financial security that would free up your time and energy from worrying about money so you could focus on spiritual matters.
